Check the need before the schedule

In a two-year tall-fescue study, sensor-based irrigation used less water than a fixed-frequency schedule. A threshold set too low caused one unacceptable quality rating, so sensor calibration matters. Checking moisture and rainfall is a cautious application of this result; a hand check does not reproduce the tested controller.

Grass type changes the response

A field study using subsurface drip found that tall fescue performed better than perennial ryegrass under the tested irrigation levels. Tall fescue maintained acceptable quality under a mild deficit in that setting. The same irrigation percentage should not be assumed safe for another soil, cultivar, or sprinkler system.

Height and water are connected

Taller TifTuf bermudagrass used more water in a greenhouse experiment, but also produced more root mass. Review watering after a change in mowing height or grass type; do not lower the mower solely to copy the water-use result.

Research finding

Green appearance and survival are different goals

A Kansas shelter trial separately measured green cover during drought and recovery after watering resumed. The tested tall fescue recovered under conditions where the bluegrass blend did not fully recover. This distinction matters when reading a drought claim: surviving, staying green, and recovering quickly are different outcomes. The trial cannot tell you how long your lawn can safely remain dry.

A review does not give every lawn one irrigation fraction

A systematic review of 83 papers found that moderate deficits often maintained acceptable quality, while excess irrigation could increase nutrient leaching. Species, soils, nitrogen supply, and evapotranspiration definitions differed. Use this as a reason to assess need and avoid excess, not to copy one percentage or an inches-per-week rule.

Watch where irrigation leaves the lawn

A California neighborhood study measured nutrient-bearing runoff generated by irrigation during a rain-free week. Water sources and irrigation timing were confounded, so it does not prove a best time of day. It does support checking for runoff into streets and drains instead of assessing watering only by grass color.
