Use growth as your cue

A two-year Nebraska trial found that weekly mowing and cuts triggered by removing no more than one-third of the canopy maintained acceptable tall fescue and buffalograss quality. Larger cuts and much less frequent mowing performed poorly. This supports the one-third rule as a starting point for those grasses, with local adjustment.

There is no single height for every lawn

In a TifTuf bermudagrass greenhouse experiment, taller treatments used more water but produced more root mass. Lower treatments generally retained better visual quality under deficit irrigation. Neither outcome establishes a universal best height. Confirm a cultivar-appropriate range locally instead of assuming that higher or lower is always better.

The season can change the height response

An Oregon tall-fescue field trial found better green cover at its lower tested mowing height during cool, humid winter conditions, but a benefit from the higher height in other seasons. That is field evidence for a climate-specific response, not a reason to lower every lawn in winter.

Think twice before bagging every cut

Cool-season field experiments found that returning clippings recycled nitrogen and supported turf quality with less fertilizer. Another long-term study found that weather and fertilizer supply changed the response. Clippings are a nutrient contribution, not a fixed replacement for all feeding.
