A greener treated plot does not prove that every ingredient in the treatment helped. The comparison matters, especially when the product was applied with fertilizer.
Look for a fertilizer-only comparison
In a Florida field study of St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass, adding humic products, biochar, or a microbial inoculant gave limited turf benefits beyond fertilizer alone. Reduced-nitrogen treatments did not consistently gain from these additions. Compost improved some soil properties and visual quality, but it also supplied nutrients. These results concern the tested products on sand-based soil.

A Maryland container study found different outcomes after mixing manufactured topsoil with composted yard waste, wood mulch, or biosolids. Wood mulch limited growth through nutrient immobilization; biosolids supplied excessive nitrogen and increased leaching. A material being organic does not establish the right use or amount. This was an incorporation experiment, not mature-lawn topdressing.
