Split applications have a research basis
A three-year trial on an irrigated cool-season mixture found more uniform color and quality with smaller nitrogen applications. It supports considering split applications when feeding is warranted, but does not establish a lawn-specific annual amount or prove that splitting prevents nutrient loss.

A Florida St. Augustinegrass case study reported acceptable turf quality after controlled-release nitrogen was applied before a summer restriction window. In a three-year bluegrass trial on soil already high in phosphorus, adding phosphorus did not improve quality when nitrogen and potassium were supplied. Some runoff losses increased. Use a locally interpreted soil test to establish a phosphorus need. This result does not justify withholding every nutrient or ignoring establishment needs.

Rainfall experiments on Baltimore lawns found greater nitrogen movement shortly after fertilization, with front yards near pavement often vulnerable. Check the forecast and likely runoff paths before an application. Avoid applying before heavy rain likely to generate runoff; follow product directions for any required watering-in. The study does not establish a universal waiting period.
