Before choosing an aeration method, identify what needs to change. Better color, more roots, and easier water entry are different outcomes.
Liquid products did not replace hollow tines in this trial
Three Georgia field experiments compared liquid products, fertilizer, and hollow-tine cultivation on TifTuf bermudagrass fairway turf. Repeated hollow-tining reduced penetration resistance and improved infiltration. Liquid treatments changed some rooting and moisture measures, but did not reproduce those compaction results. Greener turf alone was not proof of compaction relief.
Henry, Wang, Begitschke & Tucker, 2025The trial is not a diagnosis of your lawn
This evidence comes from a clay-loam golf fairway, one cultivar, and low mowing. It supports checking the measured outcome behind a product claim. It does not show that every thin lawn is compacted, or tell us how often a home lawn should be cultivated. Confirm the soil problem and species-specific recovery window locally before disturbing established turf.

Cautious applications link to their research. Practical checks cover records, safety, or local advice, not tested treatments.
- Cautious applicationAsk whether a proposed treatment has evidence for infiltration or penetration resistance, rather than only color or root growth.Henry, Wang, Begitschke & Tucker, 2025
- Cautious applicationDo not assume a liquid aeration product is equivalent to removing soil cores. The tested products did not match the mechanical treatment for those outcomes.Henry, Wang, Begitschke & Tucker, 2025
- Practical checkRecord where water collects and where traffic occurs, then request a site assessment. These observations alone do not confirm compaction.
- Practical checkBefore any equipment work, locate irrigation hardware and follow local utility-location requirements and the equipment instructions.
What this guide cannot tell you
This guide evaluates an evidence gap, not a home-lawn aeration protocol. It recommends no coring depth, frequency, date, or liquid product.
