Moisture can affect disease pressure

Golf-turf experiments found that displacing leaf moisture sometimes reduced dollar spot. In a later multi-state trial, responses varied by site, year, and removal timing; disease increased on an Ohio green in one year. These findings do not justify mowing a wet home lawn as a treatment. Leaf wetness is a diagnostic observation, not a diagnosis.

Nitrogen reduced dollar spot in several treatments in the multi-state study. Disease responses depend on the host and pathogen, so this finding is not an instruction to fertilize every brown patch.

Brown patch is not another name for dollar spot

In a two-year Indiana lawn-height study, five tall-fescue cultivars differed in brown patch severity, while the two nitrogen programs generally did not change severity within cultivars. None was immune. This argues against using a blanket nitrogen rule as disease control. It also does not justify adding nitrogen to an unidentified brown area.

The integrated practices in the multi-state golf-turf study did not consistently provide commercially acceptable disease control without fungicide support. Good cultural care should not be sold as a guaranteed cure.
