A flowering patch and a closely cut play lawn serve different purposes. Decide what you want from each area before changing its mowing routine.
Leave room for different mowing patterns
A two-year Prague study found more pollinators and greater richness in lawn patches left unmown, especially where flowering increased. Honeybees also favored mown areas with plentiful flowers. That supports considering a mix of flowering patches and maintained areas. It does not establish a universal interval or show that taller grass without flowers has the same benefit.
Rada et al., 2024Less mowing does not guarantee less weed management
In a Pennsylvania display-garden trial, species choice affected weed cover more than cutting once, twice, or three times per year. Strong creeping red fescue and tall fescue performed comparatively well, but unacceptable weeds ended the planned longer experiment. These were tall stands, not conventional lawn-height turf. Reduced mowing changes the care problem rather than eliminating it.

- Cautious applicationIf pollinator habitat is a goal, consider a small flowering patch with a different mowing pattern, adapted to local plants and rules. Treat it as a local trial, not a guaranteed biodiversity result.Rada et al., 2024

What this guide cannot tell you
The pollinator evidence is from European city lawns; the infrequent-mowing experiment was a U.S. display garden. Neither validates a nationwide No Mow May rule, a seed mix, or a weed-free lawn.
